Coley Cole? Why does that name ring a bell? Coley Cole is an original member of the Santa Cruz, California crew known as Lost And Found Generation (or LFG if you’re down with the brevity) but doesn’t stop there. He’s also a recent inductee into the Northwest’s mastodon sized Oldominion crew as well as a member of The Caliban Generals out of his hometown Visalia, California. The name Coley Cole immediately has a familiar ring to it-his track record not withstanding-but if you think you’ve heard the name before, it’s probably because the young hot rod’s production has featured the slick words of cat’s like Cage, Blueprint, Zion I, Grayskul, 2 Mex, A Plus of Hieroglyphics, Aesop of Living Legends, O.C. (Yeah, that O.C., the “Time’s Up” O.C, the .Diggin’ In The Crates O.C.) and Diego Redd, the hottest cat right now outta young Cole’s native Central California. Production’s just half of what you need to know about it because Cole got spits. In just the last few years, endless days on the road, coast to coast with his Oldominion & LFG Crews have found him sharing stages with Pharoahe Monch, Cee-Lo, Atmosphere, De La Soul, Dead Prez, KRS-One, Kweli, Mos Def, Fat Joe, The Liks, Aesop Rock, Sage Francis and every name you’ve ever paid any mind to from the underground scene. Everyone starts somewhere. If growing up in that ubiquitous broken home with moms bumping Soul Music everyday didn’t influence him then maybe it was pops wheelin’ and dealin’ on the guitar whenever he was around. Whatever it was, that routine inevitably gave way to those high school days of playing drums, dorking out on the turntables and eventually lead to freestyling and battling. You know the story ‘cause you or your boy went through the exact same shit. Once high school was done, U.C. Santa Cruz was the next stop. That’s where producing, recording and rhyming in the booth with the LFG Crew started molding Cole into the artist he is today (and at 24 years old he’s just getting started). Yeah, yeah, yeah…so what’s next? With more beats on the way for Grayskuls’ sophomore Rhymesayers full length as well as verses on the new Oldominion and A-Plus full lengths, Coley’s still as busy as ever with a career arc that’s trajectory still ain’t curved. Also on the burners are a project with Fresno’s Diego Redd, Coley’s own follow up to his critically acclaimed solo debut, “Goldplated Straightjackets” and more than a handful of mixtapes and beats being brokered around the globe to everyone you already know and love. Cole’s humble philosophy is to keep the mouth shut, the ears open and not expect shit, but people around him tend to expect him to blow up like the ink tag on a rookie thief’s Air Nikes. You’re officially on notice, weenies.
