Equipped with matinee idol looks and a smoothed out demeanor, 25 year-old Smoke (aka Smoke Maltodexitrin aka Smoke M2D6) is Oldominion’s resident white boy you could take home to mama—that is, if mama had a thing for emo-thug emcees who only rap because they can’t sing. A multifaceted and viciously talented musician, Smoke employs an aggressive combination of touring, hosting, recording, and beat-making that allows him to live almost entirely off his music—not bad for a man from a trailor in Post Falls, ID where Bob Dylan’s “You Gotta Serve Somebody” provided the prophetic soundtrack to his birth. Having opened across the nation for well-known acts such as the Gza, the Coup, Atmosphere, Swollen Members and Xzibit alongside his Oldominion fam, Smoke’s live performances evoke images of a rapping Transformer or a hip hop Paul Bunyan, while his recorded material has proved powerful enough to compel junkies to kick their habit and heartbreak sufferers to find peace.
In 2002, Mr. M2D6 traveled to Austin, TX on a mission to record an album and, after completing 80 songs, he opted to keep seven tracks for his upcoming full-length release entitled “Bleed” (which has already garnered buzz in Texas after the video for the title track received much praise). Though he currently calls the 206 his home he traverses the stretch of I-5 between Seattle and Portland regularly to host “ThornCity Improv” (an all improv hip-hop weekly) and to lend his considerable production skills to several Portland artists.
In addition to completing work on “Bleed,” Smoke is also focusing attention on EarthFireMusic, the production company he shares with fellow Oldominion member Zebulon Dak.
